Turning Back the Hands of Time:
Old Fashioned Sunday at First Congregational
As part of the ongoing celebration of our church's 275th anniversary, on September 28, members and friends at First Congregational Church went back in time to 1728 -- at least in spirit. It was "Old Fashioned Sunday," and it began with a service of worship that sought to recreate what it was like to come to church during the 18th century -- including accapella hymn singing, a reception of new members, and a sermon drawn from that historical era ("Many Mansions," written by Jonathan Edwards), preached by Rev. Lowry in period dress (complete with knickers and powder wig!).
Actually, several of our members got into the spirit of the celebration and dressed in their colonial best -- which added a great deal to the all of the day's activities, which included a picnic, games (hoop and sack races, as well as the very popular "frying pan toss" -- for women only, although the men did eventually get into the act!), judging of homemade pies, jams and relish, and a homemade ice cream social. The day closed with a short hymn sing in the sanctuary -- a fitting end to a fun and enlightening celebration!
Thanks to all who helped make this "Old Fashioned Sunday" possible, including the Christian Education Committee, the Board of Diaconate, and especially Lisa Lowry, Director of Christian Education and Nurture.
